Summer Adventures in Durango Co

Our first summer visit to my in-laws' newly acquired cabin in Durango, CO was truly unforgettable!

Eager to escape the heat and with my husband Garrett tied up with work during the week, I decided to head to the cabin a few days early with our four boys, while he planned to join us later on Friday.

On the journey, I had the younger boys in my car, while Zayne drove the truck with Karson and our dog. After driving for 7-1/2 hours and being just 30 miles away from our destination, a strange POP sound caught my attention, and moments later, my car alerted me to a flat tire, prompting me to pull over near the Montezuma fairgrounds. With Zayne driving the truck ahead, I had him turn back to assist me in resolving the situation.

It turned out that I had run over a 7/16" wrench on the road, causing a significant puncture in my tire, which unfortunately couldn't be repaired. To make matters worse, BMW vehicles no longer come equipped with a spare tire. To add to the frustration, I had recently purchased new tires. This unexpected turn of events was certainly not how I envisioned our day, especially when we were so close to our destination!

By this time, it was nearly 8 pm in the vicinity of a small town where everything had already closed by 7 pm. We had no choice but to leave my car parked there overnight and arrange for it to be towed into town the following day. Given that we couldn't all fit in the truck, Zayne took the kids, the dog, and even Jace's bearded dragon up to the cabin, then returned to pick me up.

As I waited in my car for Zayne's return, a stroke of luck occurred. A kind stranger named Matt, accompanied by his son who adored monster trucks, happened to pass by and offered to help. After introducing himself and inspecting the tire, Matt remembered where his friend stored spare BMW wheels with snow tires, just 4 miles away. Since BMW lug patterns are consistent across their SUV models, it seemed worth a try.

To cut a long story short, Matt's friend, Dr. Hope, swiftly brought a BMW wheel and tire to us around 9 pm. With a car jack conveniently available in Matt's truck, Zayne and Matt successfully changed the wheel, and to our relief, it worked perfectly!

We exchanged contact details with Matt to return the tire to Dr. Hope's family later in the week. Matt and his family's kindness served as a heartwarming reminder that the world operates in mysterious ways, and genuine kindness still exists. I finally arrived at the cabin around 10:30 pm that night, filled with gratitude and amazement.

The night (or should I say morning?) concluded with a "dance party" organized by the little boys at 12:30 am, marking the end of our eventful journey to Durango (last pic above).

During our couple week stay in June, the weather was out of this world amazing and we had countless outdoor adventures and exploring. Coming back home to the melting heat in July was really hard.

Durango is the cutest little town with very friendly people, the cutest local shops and awesome food. Some of the highlights were, exploring Mesa Verde (ancient mind blowing civilizations - highly recommend), the summer adventures at Purgatory (the older boys also mountain bilked there), relaxed at the Durango Hot Springs (my fav) and the Durango steam train was the highlight for the little boys!
