With 2024 being a leap year, we have one extra day too! Adding an extra day every four years keeps our calendar aligned correctly with the astronomical seasons. A year according to the Gregorian calendar (365 days) and a year according to Earth’s orbit around the Sun (approximately 365.25 days) are not the same length of time. Without this extra day, our calendar and the seasons would gradually get out of sync.
Each leap year, my kids and I put together a “leap year” time capsule box. Each person puts a few things in there and we tape it all up reeeeal good and stash it away in my closet. Four years later, we tear that bad boy up and look at what’s inside. We can never remember much of what we put in there and it’s always a full of suprises, giggles and fun. If you are interested in making your own leap year time capsule with your kiddos, I created a fun simple questionaire for them to fill out and include in your box as well as a cover sheet you can tape to the outside of your box so you don’t accidently open it!
