EXPLORE OUR NEIGHBORHOOD: HISTORIC LAKE MEAD TUNNEL HIKE

Last Monday when both boys were off from school for the MLK holiday we decided to go hiking at the Historic Railroad Tunnel Hike at Lake Mead.  We went with a great friend and we picked the most beautiful sunny winter morning we could have asked for.  The hike is very easy for kids to walk and is one of the only hikes you can actually bring a jogging stroller in the Las Vegas area.  It's so nice to have the stroller even if the kids don't sit in it the whole time.  It holds all your stuff and if their little legs need a rest, there is a seat available that is not mommies arms :)  There are five tunnels total, they are each 25 feet in diameter to accommodate all the large equipment that passed through these tunnels on a daily basis back in the 1930's.

There is so much beauty and history out on this trail, you won't be disappointed.  We brought our lunch and had a picnic at the end of the 5th tunnel, then turned around and made our way back.  All in all  it took us about 2-1/2 hours from start to finish.  That was with four small people walking with us too, so you could easily cut that time in half if you wanted to go sans kids. To learn even more about this awesome hike or get directions click here.  Also don't forget to bring some flashlights for the kids, they loved running through the tunnels with their flashlights shining bright ahead of them.
