A friend of mine turned me on to this Bob's 100% whole wheat pastry flour and I don't use anything else now! Thanks Dani for getting me hooked :)
It's such an awesome staple in my kitchen now, and I just had to share it with you. Before discovering this I tried using 100% whole wheat flour in my baking goods and everything came out so dense and well bland tasting. I always ended up mixing in at least 1/2 white flour. That's where this pastry flour comes in! You can strictly use this and get superb healthy whole wheat results every time!
This flour is milled from U.S. finely ground number 1 premium soft white wheat. It is high in fiber, great taste and has many more nutrients then unbleached white flour. If a recipe calls for a rising agent such as baking powder or soda this is my go to flour! I use it now for everything to cookies, muffins, quick breads, pancakes, waffles, pie crusts.
The best price I have found for this flour is at Fresh & Easy. They sell the 5 lb bag everyday for $4.29, but if you use one of their coupons and catch it on sale you can get it even cheaper. This past week their baking goods were 25% off and I scored a few 5lb bags at $3.21 a bag!!! Once it's opened I always put the bag in the freezer where it stays nice and fresh for months (but it never lasts that long).
I feel better knowing that when I use flour that it is 100% whole wheat and of course unbleached. My kids have never noticed a difference and my picky husband prefers it as well. I hope you give it a try next time you are looking to buy flour, but beware you might be like me and never look at white flour the same way again.
